CHAPEL HILL, NC — When Tanner Smith drove the lane to pull Clemson within six points of eighth-ranked North Carolina with 11:59 to play Saturday at the Dean Smith Center, the Tigers were flying high.

And when UNC’s Tyler Zeller turned the ball over on the ensuing possession, the Clemson bench went into celebration mode. It appeared everything was coming together. It appeared this might be the year Clemson finally ended its winless streak in Chapel Hill.

CLEMSON — At halftime of Tuesday night’s game against Virginia, Clemson men’s basketball coach Brad Brownell had one clear, concise message for his team.

Get more physical.

The Tigers heeded his call, repeatedly feeding the basketball into the paint and attacking the basket on the offensive end. At the same time, Clemson managed to keep the Cavaliers at bay on defense, and the combination of the two led to a 60-48 victory.

Clemson head coach Brad Brownell met with the media Monday to discuss the Wake Forest game and also look ahead to Tuesday night’s ACC Showdown with Virginia at Littlejohn Coliseum. Tipoff for the Virginia game is set for 7 p.m. and will be televised by ESPNU.

Opening statement: I’m certainly happy that our guys got a win last weekend so we feel like we are in better spirits this week as we prepare for Virginia. We played them really well at their place. We had a great first half in the game, but to Virginia’s credit they made plays down the stretch. Mike Scott was really good and Joe Harris made shots and they got away from us a little bit in the second half. We are looking forward to the rematch.

CLEMSON — If it wasn’t just hindsight that was 20-20 for Clemson head basketball coach Brad Brownell, there’s a limitless number of alternate possibilities the Tigers could be enjoying on the hardwood this season. One would think that would certainly include a scenario that would not have Clemson having lost eight games by five points or less.

Basket opens up for Coleman

Devin Coleman is a scoring guard by trade, so when he started his career only two of 23 from the field during Clemson’s first 23 games this year, it left a negative mark. Coleman’s confidence suffered as a result and pulling through the struggles while also adjusting to Brad Brownell’s system was not easy to do.

It was Clemson’s first victory at Lawrence-Joel Coliseum since the facility opened its doors during the 1989-90 season. That year, the Tigers beat Wake 89-75.
