COLUMBIA — Though the small town of Pelion is just 30 minutes from the University of South Carolina, Dalton Freeman did not grow up a South Carolina football fan. He also wasn’t a Clemson fan.

Freeman, the son of Pelion High School head coach Ben Freeman, was only a fan of the game.

Carlos Watkins could have gone to almost any school in the country to play college football, and the offers were plentiful.

Hearing the news Joe Paterno passed away Sunday morning saddened my heart as it did so many other college football fans around the country.

Sure, I did not know Joe Paterno. In fact, I never met him. But what I do know is that Paterno was a legend, not just in college football, but in sport. His tenure at Penn State was unparalleled in many circles. He was the head coach of the Nittany Lions for 46 seasons, a tenure at one school that more than likely will never be seen again.
